What to Expect from an HVAC Installation in St. Louis

By Lolich Heating & Cooling·Chesterfield, MO·Installation Guide

If you've never had an HVAC system replaced before — or it's been 15 years since the last one — it's reasonable to wonder what you're actually signing up for. How long does it take? Who shows up? What decisions do you have to make? What happens after they leave?

This is a straightforward walkthrough of what a furnace or AC installation actually looks like from start to finish. We do this every week at Lolich, and most homeowners tell us afterward that it was simpler and less disruptive than they expected.

Step 1: The Assessment and Quote

Before any installation, we come out to assess your home and existing system. This isn't just a formality — the size and layout of your home determines what equipment is actually right for it. An oversized furnace short-cycles (turns on and off too frequently), wastes fuel, and creates uneven temperatures. An undersized unit runs constantly and can't keep up on the coldest January days St. Louis gets.

During the assessment, we look at:

  • Square footage and layout of the space being conditioned
  • Current ductwork condition and sizing
  • Insulation levels and window placement
  • Existing equipment and what's being replaced
  • Any issues — poor airflow zones, drainage problems, clearance requirements

After the assessment, you get a written quote with the equipment we're recommending and why. We use Bryant equipment — it's reliable, parts are widely available, and we know it well. If there are multiple good options for your situation, we'll lay them out honestly and let you decide.

Step 2: Scheduling and Equipment Ordering

Once you decide to move forward, we schedule the install. Bryant equipment for standard residential jobs can typically be delivered within one business day, so you're rarely waiting long — even during peak season.

We'll give you a specific installation date and a time window for when we'll arrive. Most residential HVAC installs are scheduled as a full day job, even if the work itself takes less time, so we're not rushed and can handle any surprises that come up.

How long does installation take?

Most standard central AC or furnace replacements take 4–8 hours. A complete system replacement (furnace + AC together) typically runs 6–10 hours. Ductless mini-split installs can vary — a single-zone system is usually 3–5 hours; multi-zone systems take a full day or more.

If there's ductwork work involved, add time accordingly. We'll give you a realistic estimate upfront so you can plan your day.

Step 3: Installation Day

Here's what actually happens when we show up:

1
We protect your space
Drop cloths, shoe covers. We treat your home like our own. Any area we're working in or moving equipment through gets covered.
2
Old equipment comes out
We disconnect and remove the existing system, refrigerant is recovered properly (we're EPA certified), and the old equipment gets hauled away. You don't need to do anything with it.
3
New equipment goes in
The new unit is installed, refrigerant lines are connected, electrical is wired, and everything is secured properly. If there are any ductwork modifications or drainage updates needed, those happen here.
4
System startup and testing
Once installation is complete, we start the system and run it through a full test. We check refrigerant charge, airflow at the registers, thermostat calibration, and verify all safety controls are working correctly.
5
Walkthrough with you
Before we leave, we walk you through the new equipment — how to operate it, what the thermostat settings mean, filter information, and anything specific to your system you should know.

What You Need to Do Before Installation Day

Not much, honestly. A few things that help:

  • Clear a path to the equipment location — furnaces are usually in a basement or utility room, AC condensers are outside
  • Make sure someone 18+ is home for the full installation window
  • If you have pets, keep them away from work areas — for their safety and ours
  • Know where your thermostat is and whether it's staying or being replaced
  • If there's existing equipment to look at before removal, leave it accessible

Permits and Inspections

In St. Louis County, St. Charles County, Jefferson County, and the City of St. Louis, HVAC work typically requires a mechanical permit. We pull the permit and handle the inspection process — you don't need to deal with it. We're licensed in all four jurisdictions we serve.

If an inspection is required after installation, we'll schedule that and follow up with you. The inspector verifies that the work was done correctly, which is an extra layer of protection for you as a homeowner.

After Installation: Warranty and Follow-Up

Every Bryant system we install comes with a 10-year parts warranty when properly registered. We handle the registration. If anything goes wrong with covered components during that period, you're protected.

The first few days after installation are a good time to pay attention to how the system is running. New equipment should cool (or heat) noticeably more effectively than an aging system. If something doesn't seem right — unusual noise, rooms that aren't reaching temp, anything — call us. We'd rather know early.

A note on financing

New HVAC systems are a significant purchase — most residential installs in St. Louis run $6,000–$12,000 depending on the system. We offer financing through Wells Fargo, including 0% interest options, so you're not forced to make a rushed decision based on cash flow. Ask about current terms when you call.

Common Questions We Get

Can we still use the house during installation?
Yes. You'll be without heat or AC during the installation window — in summer, that means a warm house for half a day. For major work in extreme heat, we try to start early. In most cases, the system is back up before evening.
Do you haul away the old equipment?
Yes. Old units, refrigerant, packaging — it all goes with us. You won't have to deal with disposal.
What if something doesn't seem right after you leave?
Call us. There's no charge to come back and check work we just installed. If we did something wrong, we fix it — that's not even a question.
How do we know we're getting the right size system?
Proper sizing comes from the load calculation we do during the assessment. If you've ever had a contractor give you a price without measuring your home or looking at your ductwork, that's a red flag — sizing by guesswork leads to a system that either doesn't perform or burns through components early.
