First: Is the Noise New?
The most important question isn't what the noise sounds like — it's whether it's new. Every HVAC system has its own baseline of normal sounds: clicks, hums, airflow. When you notice something that wasn't there last week or last season, that's worth paying attention to.
The second question: is the system still performing normally? If your furnace is making an unfamiliar sound but the house is still heating correctly, you have time to troubleshoot. If the noise comes with reduced performance — less heat, weak airflow, the system short-cycling — that moves it up the priority list.
Common HVAC Noises — and What They Usually Mean
Banging or Clunking
Furnace / ACA loud bang when the furnace fires up often points to delayed ignition — gas builds up briefly before lighting, then ignites all at once. This puts stress on the heat exchanger and can crack it over time. On an AC or air handler, banging usually means a loose or broken component — a blower fan blade, a broken belt, or debris in the unit.
Squealing or Screeching
Furnace / Air HandlerA high-pitched squeal usually comes from a worn blower motor bearing or a slipping belt (on older systems with belt-driven blowers). Modern systems use direct-drive motors, but the bearings still wear out over time — typically after 10–15 years of use.
Rattling
Furnace / AC / DuctworkRattling is one of the most common HVAC sounds and has a wide range of causes: a loose panel on the furnace cabinet, a screw vibrating against sheet metal, debris in the outdoor AC unit, or sections of ductwork that have come loose. It can also indicate a loose blower wheel.
Clicking (Repeated)
FurnaceA single click when a furnace starts and stops is normal — that's the igniter and limit switch doing their job. Repeated clicking that doesn't lead to the burners firing usually means an ignition failure: a dirty or failed igniter, a faulty flame sensor, or a gas supply issue. The system is trying to light and failing.
Humming
AC / Heat PumpSome low humming from an outdoor AC unit is normal — it's the compressor running. A loud or unusual hum, especially one that starts and stops, can indicate a struggling capacitor (the component that helps the compressor and fan motors start). Capacitors are a common failure point on AC units, especially after 7–10 years.
Whistling or Hissing
Ductwork / Air HandlerWhistling from vents usually means air is being forced through a restriction — a dirty air filter, a closed or blocked register, or a duct leak. A hissing sound from the air handler cabinet can point to a refrigerant leak, which is more serious.
Booming or Popping from Ducts
DuctworkLoud pops or booms from the ductwork when the system turns on or off are usually the metal expanding and contracting as temperature changes. This is common in older homes and isn't typically a sign of a mechanical problem. However, unusually loud popping can also mean the ducts are undersized and experiencing pressure issues.
The One Noise You Should Never Ignore

If you hear a loud bang when your furnace starts and you notice any smell of gas — even faint — turn the system off at the thermostat, leave the house, and call your gas company before calling an HVAC tech. This is not an HVAC repair situation; it's a gas leak situation.
Repeated banging without a gas smell is still serious: it often points to delayed ignition or a cracked heat exchanger. Both warrant a service call before you keep running the system.
What to Check Before Calling a Technician
For most non-emergency noises, a few quick checks can rule out the obvious causes before you schedule a service call:
- Check your air filter — a clogged filter causes whistling, reduced airflow, and can make the system work harder in ways that create new sounds
- Make sure all supply and return registers in the house are open — closing too many off causes pressure problems
- Walk around the outdoor AC unit and look for debris (sticks, leaves, trash) that could have gotten inside the cabinet
- Check that the furnace cabinet panel is fully latched — loose panels rattle constantly
- Listen for where the sound is coming from: air handler, outdoor unit, or ductwork — that narrows the cause significantly
When a Noise Turns Into a Bigger Problem
Most of the time, HVAC noises are an early warning, not an emergency. A squealing blower bearing caught early is a $150–$300 repair. Ignored until the motor seizes, it can become a $500–$900 replacement — and potentially damage other components in the process.
The same applies to a failing capacitor on an AC unit. Replace a capacitor proactively and you're usually looking at $150–$250 in parts and labor. Let the capacitor fail completely and keep running the system — the compressor overheats and fails. A compressor replacement often runs $1,200–$2,000, and on a system that's 10+ years old, it usually makes more sense to replace the whole unit.
