St. Louis summers are hot and humid. By August, most homes have had their windows shut for months, the AC has been running constantly, and the air inside can feel stale, musty, or heavy. It's a common complaint — and your HVAC system is a bigger part of the equation than most people realize.
Here's a straightforward look at what your heating and cooling system already does for your indoor air quality, where it falls short, and which upgrades are actually worth the investment for a St. Louis home.
Why Indoor Air Quality Is a Real Concern in St. Louis
St. Louis consistently ranks among the worst cities in the country for allergy sufferers. Mold, dust mites, pollen, and pet dander are the most common indoor irritants — and St. Louis's climate makes conditions favorable for all of them. Filtration
Every return air duct pulls air through a filter before it reaches the blower and is redistributed through the house. That filter captures dust, pollen, pet dander, and some mold spores — depending on its quality. A basic fiberglass filter protects the equipment but does almost nothing for air quality. Humidity control (in cooling mode)
When your AC runs, it removes humidity from the air as a byproduct of the cooling process — moisture condenses on the cold evaporator coil and drains away. In St. Louis, this matters a lot. A properly sized, well-maintained AC can keep indoor humidity in the 45–55% range, which is where you want it for comfort and to inhibit mold growth. An oversized AC that short-cycles, or one with a dirty coil, won't dehumidify as effectively.
Where It Falls Short
A standard residential HVAC system has limits. Here's what it doesn't do well on its own:
- It doesn't ventilate: A standard system recirculates the same indoor air. It doesn't bring in fresh outside air on its own. In very tight, well-insulated homes, that can mean CO₂ buildup and stale air over time.
- It doesn't neutralize gases or odors: Filters capture particles, not gases. VOCs from paint, cleaning products, new furniture, or cooking circulate right through a standard filter.
- It can't control humidity in every season: In fall and spring when the AC isn't running, humidity can climb back up — especially in basements and crawl spaces.
- It can spread contaminants if not maintained: A dirty evaporator coil or drain pan is a breeding ground for mold and bacteria. If your system smells musty when it first kicks on, that's usually why.
Upgrades Worth Considering for St. Louis Homes
There are several add-ons that work with your existing HVAC system to meaningfully improve air quality. Here's an honest rundown of what's available and when each one makes sense.
Better Air Filters (The Easiest Upgrade)
Upgrading from a basic filter to a pleated MERV 8–11 filter is the cheapest, easiest improvement you can make. MERV 13 filters capture even more — including some viruses and bacteria — but they also restrict airflow more, which can stress older equipment.
The right filter depends on your system. If your blower isn't rated for high-resistance filters, a MERV 13 can reduce airflow enough to cause problems. When in doubt, check with your HVAC tech before upgrading to a high-MERV filter.
St. Louis tip: Change your filter every 30–60 days during heavy AC or heating use. Allergen levels in the St. Louis area peak in spring and late summer — during those periods, a 30-day replacement cycle is reasonable.
Whole-Home Dehumidifiers
A whole-home dehumidifier installs directly into your HVAC system and runs independently of the AC — which means it controls humidity in spring and fall when the AC isn't running. In St. Louis, this matters most for basements and finished lower levels where humidity tends to stay higher.
If your home feels sticky even when the AC is running, or if you see condensation on windows or musty smells in lower levels, a whole-home dehumidifier is worth looking at. Portable units work but require emptying; a whole-home unit drains automatically and requires almost no maintenance beyond a filter change.
UV Air Purifiers (In-Duct Systems)
UV purifiers mount inside the HVAC system — typically near the evaporator coil — and use ultraviolet light to kill mold, bacteria, and some viruses as air passes through. They're especially effective at keeping the evaporator coil clean and eliminating the musty smell that some systems develop over time.
UV systems don't remove particles — they work alongside a good filter, not instead of one. But for households with allergy or asthma concerns, or for homes with recurring mold issues on the coil, they're a solid investment. Bulbs need to be replaced every 1–2 years.
Energy Recovery Ventilators (ERVs)
An ERV brings fresh outside air into the home while recovering most of the energy from the outgoing air — so you get ventilation without dramatically increasing your heating or cooling costs. For very tight, well-insulated newer homes where air quality feels stale, an ERV is the right solution.
This is less commonly needed in older St. Louis homes, which tend to have enough natural air infiltration already. But for newer builds or heavily weatherized homes, it's worth having a conversation about ventilation rates.
